Back in 1992, I was passing by a rack of comic books in a drugstore in Auburn, Al when one of them caught my eye. I stopped to look at it and was amazed by the colors. It was like nothing I’d ever seen. It was rich and vibrant with shading and an interesting use of shadows. I wanted to know how it was done and thought how much fun it would be to create art like that. That comic book was Spawn #1 colored by Steve Oliff who would inspire and influence me for years. I had no idea that within a year I’d be moving to Los Angeles and landing my first job in the comic book industry. I wanted to get my career going and Los Angeles was like a breath of fresh air.
Actually, LA is quite a magical place. My first job was with Malibu Comics in Westlake Village. I worked the graveyard shift from 11pm to 8am. The pay was not very good and I got addicted to coffee. After three months of living like this I was hired at Extreme Studios in Anaheim, Ca. It was here that I met and worked with some fantastic artists. A few years later, I met Brian Haberlin and started working with him. He would have the greatest influence on my coloring. I ended up working for him for twelve years, starting with Kiss: Psycho Circus and eventually a long run on Spawn. I currently freelance, working mostly with Marvel Comics and DC Comics.
